Golden Tempo Wins 152nd Kentucky Derby in Historic Fashion

Long shot Golden Tempo stormed from the back to win the 152nd Kentucky Derby, as trainer Cherie DeVaux made history as the first female trainer to win the Run for the Roses.

Long shot Golden Tempo stormed from the back of the pack to win the 152nd Kentucky Derby on Saturday at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky, completing one of the most memorable runs in recent Derby history.

Ridden by jockey Jose Ortiz, Golden Tempo entered the race at 23-1 odds and made a sweeping move down the outside stretch to overtake the favorite, Renegade, who finished second. The 70-1 longshot Ocelli grabbed third, while Chief Wallabee rounded out the top four.

The winning time was 2:02.27 in front of a crowd of 150,415 fans.

The victory was made even more historic by trainer Cherie DeVaux, who became the first female trainer in history to win the Kentucky Derby — and only the second woman to win a Triple Crown race.

Owner Daisy Phipps Pulito took home a $3.1 million winner’s purse. “It is a family sport for us,” she said. “It’s life changing for all of us to win the Kentucky Derby. When you win a race like this, it’s the pinnacle of our sport.”

The race was briefly delayed 11 minutes after one horse, Great White, bucked its jockey at the starting gate and was scratched before the field took off.
