Columbus Sports Roundup: Clingstones Rolling Into Spring, Cougars Eye PBC Tournament

The Columbus Clingstones are three weeks into their second season at Synovus Park, the Columbus State Cougars are fighting for a PBC Tournament berth, and community fields across the city are buzzing. Here is your April sports roundup.

The Columbus sports scene is buzzing this April. From Synovus Park to the Columbus State diamond, there is plenty for local fans to follow.

Clingstones Open Second Season at Synovus Park

The Columbus Clingstones are back. Columbus’s Double-A affiliate of the Atlanta Braves opened their second season at Synovus Park on April 3 against the Chattanooga Lookouts, welcoming fans back to the riverfront ballpark for another summer of Southern League baseball.

The Clingstones’ 138-game schedule features 69 home dates across 12 homestands, with every Southern League team making at least one trip to Columbus. Upcoming homestand highlights include the Montgomery Biscuits rolling into town April 28 through May 3, and Armed Forces Day celebrations on May 16 against the Knoxville Smokies — a natural fit given Columbus’s close ties to Fort Moore.

Synovus Park remains one of the premier ballparks in Double-A baseball, celebrating its centennial year in 2026 with special giveaways and commemorative theme nights honoring the ballpark’s rich history dating to 1926. Tickets are available at the Synovus Park box office and online.

Columbus State Cougars Fighting for Postseason

It has been a tough stretch for the Columbus State Cougars baseball team. Entering 2026 as the preseason favorites in the Peach Belt Conference — earning five first-place votes from league coaches — the Cougars have found themselves playing from behind after a brutal stretch against the conference’s best.

A 16-6 run-rule loss to No. 8 University of North Georgia on April 12 handed UNG the outright PBC regular season title. North Georgia erupted for six first-inning runs and never let up, finishing with a dominant 34-10 overall record and 24-2 conference mark. Columbus State dropped to 23-15 on the year and 15-9 in PBC play.

The Cougars showed fight even in defeat. Jax Yoxtheimer went 3-for-4 with two doubles, a home run, and three runs scored, while Landen Jensen added a two-run shot. Senior Cayden Evans — who led the team with a .354 average and 74 hits last season — continues to anchor the lineup alongside All-Peach Belt outfielder Cole Eison.

With the PBC Tournament still ahead, Columbus State has not played its last game. The Cougars will need to find the form that made them the preseason pick if they are going to make a postseason run worth watching.

Community Courts and Diamonds Stay Busy

Off the college and professional fields, Columbus’s community sports scene is equally active. The South Commons Softball Complex is hosting USFA Fastpitch tournaments throughout the spring, while Cooper Creek Tennis Center is home to the CORTA Junior Banana Open — one of the region’s top youth tennis events. Basketball fans can catch the Georgia Hoopfest tournament at local gyms through the month.

Columbus’s parks and recreation facilities remain among the busiest in the region, a reflection of a community that takes its sports seriously year-round. For a full calendar of upcoming events, visit the Columbus Sports Council.
